Estepona has spent the last decade reinventing its image, turning quiet backstreets into a well-known outdoor mural gallery while keeping its fishing-town core intact. It sits roughly halfway between Marbella and Sotogrande, closer in character to a working Andalusian town than to the resort strip further east.
That geography matters here. Estepona is genuinely the western edge of what most people mean by the Costa del Sol, and Fuengirola is a proper cross-coast journey away rather than a neighbouring town.

The A-7 runs the length of the coast and is free, but it slows considerably through Marbella's built-up sections, where traffic lights and beach traffic can add real time in summer. The AP-7 toll road bypasses most of that and is the more reliable option if the journey needs to be predictable.
There is no realistic public transport shortcut. The regional bus service exists and does cover this route, but it takes noticeably longer than driving, and there is no train option at any point.
